Marks to Percentage Formula

Percentage = (Obtained Marks ÷ Total Marks) × 100

Single Subject Example

| Obtained | Total | Percentage ||----------|-------|------------|| 78 | 100 | **78%** || 425 | 500 | **85%** |

Multiple Subjects (Overall)

Add all obtained marks and all total marks, then apply the same formula:

Overall % = (Sum of Obtained ÷ Sum of Total) × 100

Common Mistakes

  • Dividing by wrong total (e.g. 1100 vs 1050 for board exams)
  • Mixing percentage with CGPA — they are different scales
  • Forgetting lab/practical marks in the total

  • Board & University Context

  • **Pakistan (Matric/Inter):** Usually out of 550, 1100, or subject-wise totals
  • **India (CBSE/State):** Often out of 100 per subject or 500 aggregate
  • **University semesters:** Check if internal + external marks are combined

  • Use our free **Marks to Percentage Calculator** — enter multiple subjects and get overall percentage instantly.
