How Final Grade Calculators Work

Most courses combine **coursework** and a **final exam** with different weights.

Weighted Average Formula

Final Grade = (Current Average × Coursework Weight) + (Final Exam Score × Exam Weight)

Weights usually add up to 100% (e.g. 60% coursework + 40% final).

What Score Do You Need?

Rearrange to find required final exam score:

Required Final = (Target Grade − Current × Coursework%) ÷ Exam%

Example

  • Current average: **82%** (coursework = 60% of grade)
  • Final exam weight: **40%**
  • Target overall: **85%**

  • Required final = (85 − 82×0.6) ÷ 0.4 = **89.5%**

You need **~90%** on the final to reach 85% overall.

    When It's Impossible

If the required score is above 100%, your target is not achievable — adjust expectations or speak with your instructor about extra credit.

Use our **Final Grade Calculator** — three modes: grade needed, total grade, and multi-assignment planning.
